Parish President Hotard joined the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, the Pontchartrain Levee District, and St. James, and St. Charles Parishes to break ground on the River Reintroduction into the Maurepas Swamp Project (MSP).
The MSP is a freshwater diversion project located in Mt. Airy that will reconnect the Mississippi River to the Maurepas Swamp and revitalize over 45,000 acres with freshwater, sediment and nutrients to nourish the area which is one of the largest and last remaining coastal freshwater swamps in Louisiana. The project will also involve dredging of the Hope Canal in Garyville and serve as mitigation for the levee project.
“A stronger Maurepas Swamp helps protect our critical infrastructure and strengthens St. John’s resilience,” said Parish President Hotard. “We are excited for the start of construction and look forward to its completion.”
