St. John Parish to Host Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day

St. John Parish, along with St. Charles Parish and numerous industry partners, will host a Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026.  

The St. Charles Parish collection site will be at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, located at 274 Judge Dufresne Parkway in Luling. The St. John the Baptist Parish collection site will be at the St. John Community Center, located at 2900 US-51in LaPlace. Event staff will check IDs to verify residency before accepting materials, and residents of both parishes can utilize either location.

This event will help keep excess chemicals out of our homes, waterways, and landfills, so every item collected makes our community cleaner and safer for all.

The following household hazardous materials will be accepted and properly disposed of or recycled:  

  • oil-based paint
  • solvents
  • tires (at the St. Charles site ONLY, limit five per vehicle and one delivery only)
  • automotive and other rechargeable batteries
  • household cleaning products
  • acids/bases
  • used oil
  • antifreeze
  • aerosol cans
  • fluorescent lamps
  • pesticides and herbicides
  • scrap metal
  • major appliances
  • used electronics, such as used computers, copiers, printers, radios, TVs and other electronic devices.  

The following items cannot be accepted at the event:

  • explosives or ammunition (Contact your local Sheriff’s Office for disposal)
  • medical wastes
  • unidentifiable materials
  • compressed gas cylinders, including propane tanks
  • radioactive waste, including smoke alarms
  • asbestos
  • latex paint
  • lab or commercial facility waste, including in-home business waste

Latex paint will not be accepted. Residents can allow cans of paint to dry completely and dispose of them with their regular household trash.
